Vehicle Description

Driver-quality Z/28 With Numbers-matching 302 Dz Engine — Great Looks, Honest Flaws, Priced To Move

OVERALL CONDITION: The Hugger Orange paint presents well from 10 feet but shows its age up close. Multiple stone chips on the leading edges, a 3-inch stress crack near the driver-side fender, and the rear quarter has been touched up in a slightly off-shade. Body panels are straight with factory gaps mostly intact — the driver door sits slightly proud at the bottom. White stripes are decals and show minor lifting at the edges. Chrome bumpers have light pitting; trim is original with patina. Glass is clear all around except a small chip in the windshield (not in driver's line of sight). Interior is presentable — original-style black vinyl seats with correct Z/28 steering wheel, but the driver seat has a split seam on the bottom cushion and the headliner sags slightly at the C-pillar. Carpet is faded but intact. Dash pad has a crack (typical '69 Camaro). Door panels are original with minor scuffing.

ENGINE: The numbers-matching 302 DZ-code V8 fires up quickly with a lopey idle. Compression test showed 165-175 psi across all cylinders — healthy but not new. The cam has a slight tick that's been present for years — not getting worse but worth monitoring. Oil pressure reads 35 psi at idle hot, 55 psi at speed — normal for this engine. Valve covers show minor seepage at the gasket. Holley carb was rebuilt 2 years ago and still runs clean — no black smoke, no lean pop. Headers are aftermarket Hooker and have surface rust starting at the collector. Cooling system is adequate — runs at 195°F in traffic, 180°F on the highway. No overheating issues. Exhaust is a dual system with FlowMaster mufflers — sounds aggressive and correct.

TRANSMISSION: Muncie M21 4-speed shifts cleanly through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 4th gear occasionally grinds on a hard shift at high RPM — syncro showing wear. Clutch is a Centerforce unit with about 60% life remaining. It grabs well but has a slightly heavy pedal. No clutch slippage observed. Shifter is a Hurst Competition Plus and moves with authority — no excessive play.

BRAKES: Manual drum brakes all around — this is a non-power brake car. Pedal is firm but requires a firm foot in panic stops. Front drums are at 50% remaining; rears at 40%. Parking brake works but needs adjustment. Brake lines are original-style steel — no visible corrosion but the rubber hoses are aging and should be replaced soon.

UNDERCARRIAGE: Frame is solid with no structural rust. Surface rust on the undercarriage throughout — typical for a car that's been driven. Floor pans are original and have two small perforations on the driver-side toe board (about the size of a quarter each). Trunk floor is solid. Subframe connectors have been welded in. Rear leaf springs are original and sagging slightly — a 1-inch rake difference side-to-side. Gas tank is original with minor surface scale but no leaks. Brake and fuel lines run cleanly through the chassis.

Test Drive Experience

Starting with a cold turn of the key, the DZ 302 catches on the second crank and settles into a lumpy idle at 850 RPM — that's the 30-30 Duntov cam doing its thing. It sounds like a Z/28 should — aggressive, mechanical, purposeful. After a 3-minute warm-up, the temp gauge stabilizes at 180°F and we head out.

First gear hooks up instantly, and the Muncie clicks into second with that satisfying Hurst click — clack, clack. The clutch pedal is firm but not exhausting; you feel the engagement point clearly. Around town, the car is surprisingly docile — the 302 has torque down low and the 3.73 rear gear makes it feel lively at any speed.

Out on the highway, 70 MPH puts you at about 2,800 RPM in 4th gear — the engine is happy but not over-revving. The ride is firm and jittery; the suspension is original-spec and you feel every crack. Steering is manual and heavy at parking speeds but weights up nicely above 30 MPH.

The drum brakes require a firm, deliberate push — you have to plan your stops. No pull to either side under braking. Wind noise from the door seals is noticeable above 60 MPH.

After 45 minutes of mixed driving, the temp never exceeded 205°F and the oil pressure held steady at 35 psi hot idle. This is an honest driver — not a show queen, but a real Z/28 that feels alive.
