440 R/T Charger — Driver Quality, Great Colors, Solid Car
OVERALL CONDITION: Go Mango Orange paint is a repaint from 5 years ago and still looks good. Minor chips on the hood and front edge of the doors. One small run on the driver's quarter panel. The body is straight with good panel fit. The R/T stripe is correct and clean. Chrome is presentable — front bumper has a small dent. All glass is clear. 15-inch Rallye wheels with correct center caps. Interior is saddle tan vinyl — driver quality with wear on the driver's seat bottom. The Rallye gauge cluster with tachometer works. Center console is present. The woodgrain trim on the dash is aging — slightly faded. Carpet is clean. Headliner is tight. The interior has a nice original feel — not new but honest.
ENGINE: 440 CI V8 Magnum rated at 375 HP. It starts on the first crank and idles smoothly at 800 RPM — the 440 has a deep, strong sound but is smoother than the Hemi. No smoke, no leaks. Compression is 165-175 psi across all cylinders — consistent. The 4-barrel carburetor runs clean — no stumble, no rich running. The engine pulls hard from 2,000 RPM and the torque curve is broad. Cooling system uses a large radiator — runs at 190°F. Stock exhaust manifolds feed a dual exhaust with turbo mufflers — the sound is deep and authoritative. This is a healthy, strong-running 440.
TRANSMISSION: 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic (727). The transmission shifts firmly — 1-2 shift at full throttle is hard and positive. The 2-3 shift is smooth. Downshifting is immediate when you floor it. No slippage, no hesitation. The TorqueFlite is the best automatic transmission of the era and this one works great. Fluid is clean and pink.
BRAKES: Power disc brakes front and rear. The pedal is firm and the brakes are strong. Front discs at 70%, rears at 60%. The system works well — this car stops better than many of its era. Parking brake works.
UNDERCARRIAGE: Frame is solid — no structural rust. Surface rust throughout but no perforation. Floor pans are original and solid with light surface rust only. Trunk floor is clean. The spare tire well has minor surface scale. Front suspension has been serviced — new ball joints and tie rod ends. Rear is a Dana 60 with 3.23 gears — correct for an R/T. Gas tank is clean. The undercarriage is solid and well-maintained — a good driver-level car underneath.
Test Drive Experience
The 440 Magnum starts with a deep, confident rumble — it's smoother than the Hemi but still serious. The TorqueFlite drops into Drive with a firm engagement and the Charger rolls out smoothly. Around town, the 440 is effortless — the torque is broad and the automatic transmission takes care of the shifting.
When you floor it, the 440 comes alive — the TorqueFlite kicks down and the car surges forward with a big-block rush. The Charger is heavy and it feels it — the body rolls in corners and the steering is light but vague. But it's a highway cruiser — at 70 MPH, the 440 is at 2,200 RPM and the car is smooth, quiet, and comfortable.
The ride is soft and compliant — this is a touring car, not a corner-carver. The power disc brakes are strong and sure. After 40 minutes of driving, the temp never exceeded 190°F.
This is a great driver-quality R/T Charger — it has the look, the sound, and the power, and it's reliable. You could drive this car anywhere.
