Legendary 426 Hemi Charger R/T — Driver Quality, Rare And Powerful
OVERALL CONDITION: B5 Blue paint is a repaint from 8 years ago — it looks good at a distance but has issues up close. There's a 3-inch run on the passenger door and orange peel on the roof. The body is straight with good gaps. R/T decals are present and correct. The vinyl top is a replacement and looks good — no bubbling underneath. Chrome bumpers are re-plated and clean. All glass is clear. The 15-inch Rallye wheels are correct and in good condition. Interior is black vinyl bucket seats — driver quality. The front seats have minor wear on the bottom cushions. The Rallye gauge cluster with the tachometer works — all gauges read correctly except the clock. Center console is present and in good shape. The pistol-grip shifter is correct. Carpet is clean. Headliner is tight. Door panels are good. The interior is presentable for a driver.
ENGINE: 426 CI Hemi V8 — the legendary engine. It's not numbers-matching but is a correct 426 Hemi block with original-style heads. The engine starts after a few cranks — it has dual 4-barrel carburetors and needs a moment to warm up. Once warm, it idles at 850 RPM with a deep, powerful sound. The Hemi has a distinct mechanical sound — you can hear the cam, the lifters, and the huge intake. Compression is 170-180 psi across all cylinders — strong. No smoke, no leaks from the engine. The cooling system uses a large aluminum radiator — runs at 195°F consistently. The exhaust is stock-style with Hemi exhaust manifolds into a dual system — the sound is deep and intimidating. This engine runs strong.
TRANSMISSION: A833 4-speed manual with the Hurst pistol-grip shifter. Shifts are firm and mechanical — 1st through 3rd are clean, 4th gear is fine. The shifter has the classic pistol-grip feel — deliberate and positive. Clutch is a heavy-duty unit with a firm pedal — this is a Hemi clutch and it's stiff. No grinding, no slippage. The 4-speed is in good condition.
BRAKES: Power disc brakes front and rear — non-original upgrade. The pedal is firm and the brakes are adequate. Front discs are at 60%, rear at 50%. The system works well for normal driving. Parking brake works.
UNDERCARRIAGE: Frame is solid — no structural rust. Surface rust on the undercarriage throughout. Floor pans are original and solid with surface rust — no perforation. The trunk floor has one small rust spot (1-inch) near the spare tire well. Front suspension is original-spec with newer bushings. Rear is a Dana 60 with 3.54 gears — correct for an R/T. The Dana 60 is the correct rear end for a Hemi car. Gas tank is original with surface rust — no leaks. The undercarriage is solid and serviceable.
Test Drive Experience
Turn the key and the 426 Hemi fires with a sound that makes you stop and listen. It's not like any other engine — the Hemi has a deep, mechanical, authoritative sound that lets everyone know what it is. The dual quads mean it needs a moment to warm up — don't rush it.
The clutch is heavy — this is a serious piece of machinery. First gear, the pistol-grip shifter clicks into place, and when you let out the clutch, the Charger moves with purpose — the Hemi has torque everywhere. At 3,000 RPM, the engine comes alive and the car pulls like nothing else — the torque is immediate and enormous.
The A833 shifts with a mechanical precision — you feel every gear. The Charger is a big car and it feels it — the steering is heavy, the body rolls in corners, and the ride is soft. But in a straight line, this car is terrifyingly fast.
At 70 MPH in 4th gear, the Hemi is at 2,400 RPM — surprisingly calm for what it is. The brakes are adequate — the power discs haul the big car down. After 30 minutes, the temp held at 195°F.
Driving a Hemi Charger is an experience — it's not refined, not modern, and not subtle. It's a legend with an engine that sounds like thunder and moves like lightning.
