Solid Scout II — 304 V8, 4X4, Driver Quality, Ready For Adventure
OVERALL CONDITION: Sherwin Volvo Blue paint is a repaint from 5 years ago — it looks good and fits the Scout's rugged character. Minor chips on the hood and doors from trail use. The body is straight but has off-road scars: a dent on the passenger-side rear quarter and a scrape on the driver's rocker. Surface rust is starting at the bottom of the tailgate and the wheel arches. The removable hard top is in good condition — no leaks. The roof is painted white over the blue — a nice two-tone look. 15-inch wheels with 31-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires — aggressive and capable. Glass is clear all around. Interior is black — functional and clean. The front seats are aftermarket buckets in good condition. The rear seat is original-style and functional. The dash has a few aftermarket gauges added. The heater works. The interior is simple and honest — it's a 4x4, not a luxury vehicle. The rubber floor covering is practical.
ENGINE: 304 CI V8 rated at 150 HP — original International engine. It starts and runs — it's a tractor engine, not a performance engine. The idle is at 700 RPM and is slightly rough — that's the 304's character. No smoke. Compression is 130-140 psi — lower than a Chevy 350, but this is an International engine with a different design. The 2-barrel carburetor runs okay — it has a slight stumble off idle that may be a dirty carb. No oil leaks — remarkably clean for an International. The cooling system runs at 195°F. The exhaust is stock-style — quiet. This engine is reliable but slow.
TRANSMISSION: 3-speed manual (T90) with a Dana 20 transfer case. The 3-speed is a crash-box style — no syncro on 1st gear. Shifts are mechanical and deliberate. The clutch is firm but functional. 4WD engages with the floor levers — 4H and 4L work. The transmission is correct and functional.
BRAKES: Power front disc, rear drum — the front disc is an upgrade. The pedal is firm and the brakes are adequate. Front discs at 50%. Rear shoes at 60%. The system works well — much better than original drum brakes. Parking brake works.
UNDERCARRIAGE: Frame is solid — International frames are thick and this one is good. Surface rust throughout but no structural issues. The body mounts are solid. The suspension has a 2-inch lift with new springs. Dana 44 front and rear axles — bulletproof. The drive shafts are good. The gas tank is a 20-gallon unit — clean. The undercarriage shows trail use — scratches and minor dings — but is mechanically sound.
Test Drive Experience
The 304 fires up with a tractor-like idle — it's not smooth, not fast, and not refined. That's the charm. The T90 3-speed requires a deliberate hand — first gear is non-synchronized, so you shift into first while stopped.
The clutch is firm. Rolling out, the Scout is slow — 150 HP in a 4,000-pound truck means you're not winning any races. But it's capable.
The 31-inch BFGoodrich tires grip on any surface — pavement, dirt, gravel, or mud. The Dana 44 axles are bulletproof. The 4WD engages with floor levers — it's a mechanical, honest system.
On the highway, 55 MPH in 3rd gear puts the engine at 3,000 RPM — this truck was not built for highway cruising. There's wind noise from the boxy shape and the ride is bouncy. The steering has play but the truck tracks straight.
The disc brakes are a big improvement — the truck stops well. The removable hard top is a nice feature — take it off and you have an open-air 4x4. After 30 minutes of mixed driving, the temp held at 195°F.
This is a capable, reliable, and charming 4x4 — it's not fast or refined, but it's an International Scout and that's the point.
