Vehicle Description
Documented Motion Performance Race Car — K-code Fastback With Racing History
OVERALL CONDITION: This is not a show car — it's a surviving race car with documented history, and it shows. The paint is the original racing livery with sponsor decals and the Motion Performance graphics. The graphics have been repainted by the original artist — they are authentic but show age: minor cracking in the lettering, some fading on the hood. The body has been restored but retains its as-raced look — not perfect, not show-quality, but honest. There are stress cracks in the fiberglass hood scoop. The front fenders have been cut for the big-tire clearance in the rear — this is period-correct for the racing modification. Chrome is minimal (race car). Glass is original and clear but the windshield has racing rub marks. Interior is pure race car: Stewart Warner gauges, Motion Performance column tach, Hurst Super Shifter, no back seat (removed for weight), racing bucket seats with racing harnesses. The cage is a period-correct 6-point. This is not a car you take to a concourse — it's a car you take to a car show and tell stories about.
ENGINE: 302 CI V8 bored and stroked to 336 CI. The engine was built for drag racing and retains a race-spec cam — it idles rough at 950 RPM and smells of unburnt fuel. It starts with a few pumps of the throttle — not a key-and-go car. Compression is 175+ psi across all cylinders — strong. The engine has a noticeable vibration at idle that smooths out above 1,500 RPM. Long tube headers feed an X-pipe and glasspack resonators — the sound is loud, raw, and aggressive. The carburetor is a Holley 750 double-pumper tuned for drag racing — it runs rich at idle and part-throttle. No leaks, no smoke. The cooling system uses a large aluminum radiator — runs at 195°F. This engine is healthy and period-correct.
TRANSMISSION: Top Loader 4-speed manual with a Hurst Super Shifter. The shifter is a competition unit with a long handle — shifts are mechanical and require deliberate effort. First gear is non-synchronized and can be clunky. The clutch is a heavy-duty unit with a stiff pedal — this is a race clutch. No grinding if shifted properly. No slippage.
BRAKES: Manual drum brakes front and rear — no power assist. The pedal is very heavy and the stopping distance is long. Front drums are at 40%. This brake system is inadequate for modern driving and needs upgrading for street use. The parking brake does not function — the cable is disconnected (race car).
UNDERCARRIAGE: Frame is solid and straight — no structural rust, no accident damage. The frame has been reinforced with subframe connectors welded in for drag racing. Floor pans are original with surface rust and one small repair patch on the driver side. Rear traction bars are welded to the frame. The 9-inch rear has a 4.30 Detroit Locker — it clicks and bangs around corners as a locker should. Gas tank is original. The undercarriage shows its racing history — weld marks, repairs, and scars — but it's solid and safe.
Test Drive Experience
Starting the 336 stroker is a ritual — pump the throttle three times, turn the key, and it fires with a bark. The idle is rough and lumpy — the race cam shakes the whole car. It smells like a race car: raw fuel, hot oil, and exhaust.
Let it warm up for 5 minutes — don't rush it. The clutch is heavy — this is not a car for traffic. First gear engages with a clunk and the car wants to go — the 4.30 gear means acceleration is immediate and violent.
The Detroit Locker bangs around corners and the rear end chatters. The shifter requires a deliberate, forceful motion — this is a race transmission with a race shifter. At 55 MPH in 4th gear, the engine is at 3,500 RPM — this car was not built for highway cruising.
The steering is manual and heavy. The drum brakes require both feet and advance planning. But — when you mat the throttle in 2nd gear and the 336 hits its power band, the car lunges forward with a ferocity that reminds you it was built to take out Camaros on the drag strip.
This is not a daily driver. This is a piece of American racing history that you drive on weekends, to car shows, and to remember a different era. It's magnificent.
